Leave a useful note for the person returning later

Imagine a fictional designer pausing work on a small exhibition booklet after preparing version three. The layout exists, but the reason for its empty final spread is easy to forget. This original context-card exercise records what a returning collaborator would need to know. It is a documentation example, not evidence that a particular system improves recall.

01

Attach the card to a specific version

Begin with the project title, the draft reference and the date of the note. In the example, use “Booklet V3” and identify the actual file location when applying the worksheet to real work. Add one sentence describing the draft’s purpose. Keep the card close to the file or provide a clear link in the existing workspace. A generic note labelled “latest” becomes ambiguous as soon as a new draft appears. A specific reference gives the next reader a way to check whether the explanation belongs to the version in front of them.

Record the decision and its basis separately — IntrinsicMemoryBooklet V3Image pendingCheck the source noteRecord the reason

02

Record the decision and its basis separately

Write that the final spread was left empty to hold a contributor’s photograph, then identify the message or discussion that established that plan. If the source cannot be located, label the explanation as the author’s recollection. Keep the decision separate from the unfinished action of obtaining the image. This prevents an empty space from looking like an accidental omission while also avoiding an unsupported claim that the image has already been supplied. The card should make the status of the work legible without inventing missing history.

Leave a next question and update the card when resuming — IntrinsicMemoryBooklet V3Image pendingCheck the source noteLeave the next question

03

Leave a next question and update the card when resuming

The next question could be whether the photograph is still expected for this version. Record who can answer and what should be reviewed after the answer arrives. When work resumes, add a dated continuation note rather than silently replacing the earlier explanation. If the spread is filled with different material, identify that change and its basis. The finished card has a draft reference, purpose, decision, source and next question: enough context to restart the discussion while keeping the limits of the record visible.
